The Shabbat Candles of Tradition – Anniversary Ketubah

This Ketubah was prepared, painted and custom designed to commemorate a 40th wedding anniversary, where the Ketubah was gifted from the wife to her husband as a present marking this significant occasion.

Overlaying an oceanic background, the Jewish motifs of the Shabbat candlesticks express a love that illuminates and warms the home.

The pairing of the antique Shabbat candles on either side of the text are a homage to the tradition of honouring the Sabbath, as well as the ritual of candle lighting that characterizes the ushering in and marking of chaggim such as Chanukah.

The initials are rendered in a metallic gold paint whose surface radiates with a shimmering fire, echoing the pearlescent and glowing quality the iridescent candle flames exhibit.

The hymn “אני לדודי ודודי לי – I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine ” (Song of Songs – Shir HaShirim 6:3), a romantic declaration between husband and wife written by King Solomon wraps around the initials to create a dome. This psalm evokes the intrinsic commitment, care and responsibility mutually undertaken by husband and wife in their marriage of the past 40 years, and proceeding forwards.

Whilst this revised anniversary Ketubah has no halachic standing (due to the impossibility of being signed by a witness on the wedding day), if you would like text from your original Ketubah curated and placed on an artwork to be displayed in your home, please get in touch so we can create something special.

The thick impasto application of the painted candles mimics the waxy texture of melting Shabbat candles, slowly dripping.
