Hand Sculpted Ceramic Mezuzot Houses
Small sacred sculptures for the threshold of the Jewish home
Each ceramic mezuzah is individually shaped by artist and sculptor Ryan Abramowitz who has interpreted the Mezuzah cover as a form shaped not only by tradition, but by the earth itself.
Glazed pieces draw upon the colours and textures of earth, sea, riverbed, moss, meadow and weathered stone. Unglazed works retain the raw character of the clay, appearing as though they have been carved from rock or uncovered among the ancient stones of Jerusalem. Each is painted with a metallic gold ink Shin.
No two are exactly alike. Subtle variations, marks and irregularities are embraced as part of each piece’s character, something shaped slowly by hand, rather than manufactured.
A Mezuzah rests at the meeting point between the world outside and the sanctuary within. These pieces are conceived not only as ceremonial objects, but as intimate works of sculpture: marking a home with memory, protection and belonging.
Existing works accommodate the five most widely used klaf sizes: 6 cm, 7 cm, 10 cm, 12 cm and 15 cm. Bespoke pieces can also be created for other dimensions, with custom colours, forms and surface textures available upon request.
A limited number of edition one pieces remain available in Australia. New works, now handmade in Brighton, England, will be available from October 2026 and may be commissioned for homes throughout the UK, Australia and internationally.
The collection was exhibited at Goldstone Gallery as part of Melbourne Design Week 2026. Presented in an organic, landscape-like arrangement, the mezuzot appeared as a family of small sculptural forms—each distinct, yet connected by material, memory and place.
